Call of Duty 2 Revival: Dead on Arrival?

COD2 Malta

Is the CoD2 revival movement dead? Or can it come back at any time for a LAN?

A Nostalgic Phenomenon

A few months back, the Maltese esports community was abuzz with excitement, as the possibility of a long-awaited LAN was around the corner. The veterans of the Maltese CoD2 community banded back together, re-forming old teams and alliances, practicing, and bringing back the nostalgia of one of the best competitive tactical FPS games to ever exist.

Twenty years ago, Call of Duty 2 had a cult following in Malta. EVERYONE was playing it. It spread like wildfire through schools, MCAST, and through word of mouth. Maltese public servers with dozens of players each were packed day and night, and the competitive scene had numerous iconic teams striving for the top position. In the last several years, activity slowed, yet nostalgic tournaments organised every couple of years by GMR re-created that magic, albeit for a short while.

The 2024 Revival

The latest surge in the local CoD2 community was unexpected, however. The last local event for Call of Duty 2 took place seven years ago at the Malta eSports Festival 2017, but the community somehow got back together.

Faltering Momentum

The effort seems to have been short-lived, however, as an attempt by Zelli0n to organise a one-night cup under the Kazin LAN Trials failed to get any sign-ups, putting into question the possibility of a LAN.

The last message on the CoD2 Malta Discord is a sad reminder of times gone by.

Can the CoD2 community come back for a LAN again?
