On February 10th, DAIGON Esports, the newest esports business to set up on the island, issued a press release announcing the inaugural School Esports World Championships.
The ambitious event is an interschool activity, involving a number of prestigious international schools, and associations of international schools, including the Council of British International Schools, the Education Collaborative for International Schools, the British Schools in the Middle East, and the Independent Schools Association.
What does it consist of? What games will be played?
250 representatives of these international schools will seemingly descend in Malta on the 8th-12th October 2025 for the extra-curricular activity of our dreams – an esports competition amongst schools. Students aged nine to sixteen years of age will be competing in Minecraft CTF and Rocket League.
Playcon vibes?
Whilst there doesn’t seem to be confirmation as of yet, October is when traditionally, Playcon takes place – and therefore there’s a chance that the School Esports World Championships could take place during Playcon.
If 250 competitors show up for the event, it would also be one of the largest esports competitions ever to take place in Malta, trailing Playcon’s own ‘Malta Royale’ in 2019.
Can Maltese schools participate?
This is not mentioned in the press release, but it could be an incredible opportunity!
If you’re a student, and this interests you, maybe you should bring this up with your own school. Perhaps some Maltese schools might get interested in following in the footsteps of their international peers, if they have enough pressure from their students!
