League of Legends Background Scene
The league of legends scene stagnated back in 2018-19, with many prominent figures and elder members deciding to hang up their mantle for one reason or another, such as family, time and commitment. The League of Legends Malta Association fell into decline when countless members, such as Matteo Privitelli and Mark Agius, stepped away. The league of legends scene saw a small resurgence in 2021, though the only words to be heard during that time, were ‘Agony’ and ‘Eversio’. This is the scene on which League of Malta made its debut. Birth of a discord server
Janssen Laferla had been working with Level Academy for some time, before deciding to embark on this solo venture of gathering as many league of legends afficionados into one server as possible. He decided to found the server since he was one of the earlier league of legends players and felt terrible that the scene had died out so harshly, and there was nothing left. The discord was created five months ago and the members occasionally play Custom games, ARAM games, or discuss tactics and strategies with each other.
LCM 2024
LCM 2024 was announced – A grand total of 14 teams signing up in order to compete in a round robin style draft tournament. This was an insane amount, especially when considering how little teams had been constantly signing up for tournaments prior to this one. The prize pool was set at €200 for first place, €100 for second place and €25 for third place, with sign-up fees being set at five euro per player.
LCM 2024 – Immortalised
One could argue that one of the challenges LCM faced was collecting all the resources and expertise necessary in order to simply – immortalise – the entire tournament. What we mean by that, is that every single stat, every single win, and loss, was recorded. The entire proceedings of the tournament were streamed live, and also uploaded to Youtube. In fact, you can view the structure of all teams as set during the tournament over here and you may also view the standings and final rankings of the tournament here
Production Team
Anyone who aided in the production and scheduling of the event deserves a shoutout. The entire event would definitely not have been possible without everyone’s will and grit to hunker down and contribute when it mattered. Sure, the ones which may have the spotlight shining down on them were primarily the streamers and the casters, but one should surely not forget the hosts and all those who contributed in any way. Here follows a list, with links accompanying the streamers which featured:
Aiglos, Beano99, cardonacasts, Chris23, Dickinio, Fazola, Hytechro, Kaine, KaliCat, Lebonbon, l9lemonmelonanselm, Nanoattack, Owen Montebello, Sepion, Shadow, Yansin
Eversio VS Agony
This finalist match-up prevails, though I feel confident in writing that even these two titans were shook up by the talent on display during this tournament. While congratulating them for proving themselves to the top once more – and also congratulating Eversio for claiming the victory in the hard-fought finals – one must wonder, how long can Eversio and Agony hang on to the crown? Heavy is the crown.
A Way Forward
What does this mean for the way forward for League of Malta? Will this be a short-term revival or is this community here to stay? And what of all the teams that took part? Will they count their losses and detach from the scene, or will they take it as a learning experience and work to refine their relationships, their strategies and their team plays and come back stronger for any upcoming tournaments? We here at Esports Malta, firmly stand behind all of these courageous teams which put their foot forward in this tournament and wish them – and the production team – all the best for the future!
