Tekken Commentator Calls for Maltese Players to Be Banned from Tournaments

A resurfaced clip has sparked controversy in the Tekken community, as popular Twitch streamer and commentator Hassan “Spag” Farooq publicly called for Maltese players to be banned from tournaments due to being “laggy.”

Spag, also known as SpaghettiRip, is a prominent figure in the Tekken scene. He has served as an official commentator at some of the most prestigious Tekken tournaments, including Bandai Namco’s Tekken World Tour, Evo, DreamHack, and the Esports World Cup. With over 18,000 followers on Twitch and 27,000 on X (formerly Twitter), Spag is a highly influential voice in the community.

The clip shows Spag, visibly frustrated, launching into a tirade against Maltese player Kaneo, using several expletives before explicitly calling for Maltese players to be banned from competitive Tekken events.

What Happened?

The incident occurred during an online tournament where Kaneo defeated Spag while Spag was live-streaming his matches. The loss appeared to provoke an emotional response from the commentator.

Spag is no stranger to Malta. He was invited to the island twice to participate in the Malta Cyber Series:

  • 2022 – Malta Cyber Series VI: Spag both commentated and competed, advancing through the last-chance qualifiers and eliminating several local players, including Addicttekken, Lyonidas, and Kaneo himself.
  • 2023 – Malta Cyber Series VII: He returned to commentate once again.

Both events were sponsored by the Maltese government, which suggests that Spag was likely compensated using Maltese taxpayers’ money for his appearances and travel.

Commentary and Reactions

While raging is not uncommon in high-stakes competitive gaming, especially in a technical and emotionally intense game like Tekken, calling for a national ban crosses a significant line. It borders on discriminatory speech based on nationality—a serious and concerning stance, particularly from someone in Spag’s position of influence.

Given the opportunities and hospitality extended to him by the Maltese gaming community, some feel that this outburst reflects an unjustified resentment rather than isolated frustration.

Was Spag’s Reaction Proportionate?

Let us know what you think. Was this just heat-of-the-moment rage, or did Spag go too far?
