Four clubs dropped out – What happened?

As can be seen in the table above, 4 of the clubs that had a player represent them last year, will not be involved with this season of MEPL. Those clubs are:

  • Santa Lucia FC
  • Gudja United
  • Sirens FC
  • Valletta FC

One might ask as to why these clubs are not taking part this year, and while we do not have public answers, we can speculate on this by looking at last season’s results. It’s fair to mention that three from the list above placed in the bottom 4 of the table, meaning that they probably did not think it was worth re-entering the competition, especially as other clubs would probably poach the better players in the league.

One thing of note however, is that Valletta FC, a team that placed 5th/6th last season through Vli’s participation actually had a decent standing at the end of the tournament. Due to the clubs stature one could assume that they would have probably opted to snatch Brandsha away from Hamrun Spartans, or Klawka from Sliema Wanderers. Knowing that they would have wanted to stay with their clubs for another season would mean that Valletta would have to opt for a different representative as Vli would not be taking part in this season’s main event.

Some clubs are out, but who’s new?

We’ve got two new clubs this season, Zabbar FC and Melita FC! Both clubs have signed players that took part last season, one having more success than the other as Tubbi placed 7th/8th whereas Woncu placed 11th/12th.

Fair to say it’s going to be an interesting season of EAFC, especially with the community’s controversial opinions on the game. Nevertheless, we expect another action-packed event all throughout, and hope to see some of the new faces take the stage by storm.
